چکیده

Pneumocephalus is defined as an intracranial gas collection which can be localized in the epidural, subdural, subarachnoid, intraventricular or intraparenchymal spaces. Pneumocephalus has numerous causes, including barotrauma, neoplasms, and spinal anesthesia. However, the majority of pneumocephalus cases are traumatic or iatrogenic in nature. A review of 295 patients with pneumocephalus by Markham also indicated that trauma is the most common cause of pneumocephalus and accounts for 75% of cases. Similar research finds pneumocephalus occurring in 0.5 to 1.0% of head trauma. In such traumatic cases, air can gain access into the cranium through a fracture involving a paranasal sinus or the middle ear cavity or less frequently in association with a compound depressed fracture of the cranial vault.

Communicating Hydrocephalus Onset Following a Traumatic Tension Pneumocephalus

The entrapment of intracranial air from the check valve system results in a tension pneumocephalus. It should be distinguished from simple pneumocephalus because they are intracranial space-occupying masses that can threaten life. Communicating hydrocephalus is a serious and frequent complication of post-traumatic head injury. Head injury is one of the most common causes in etiopathogenesis of ...

Delayed spontaneous traumatic pneumocephalus.

Pneumocephalus or collection of air in the intracranial cavity can occur after trauma or surgery. However, delayed pneumocephalus occurring months after the initial injury is not common. We would like to report a case of spontaneous traumatic pneumoencephalocele presenting with transient recurrent hemiparesis 14 months after the initial trauma.

Report of Two Cases Intracerebral Tension Pneumocephalus

Intracerebral tension pneumocephalus is a rare disorder. Only five cases of them have been reported since 1985. We report two cases of intracerebral tension pneumocephalus with traumatic rhinorrhea. In the first case, intracerebral tension pneumocephalus was induced by lumbar puncture performed two months after trauma. In the second case, intracerebral tension pneumocephalus was observed on com...

OTOGENIC TENSION PNEUMOCEPHALUS CAUSED BY THERAPEUTIC LUMBAR CSF DRAINAGE FOR POST-TRAUMATIC HYDROCEPHALUS: A CASE REPORT Otogenic tension pneumocephalus caused by therapeutic lumbar CSF drainage for post-traumatic hydrocephalus: A case report

Tension pneumocephalus occurs when a continuous flow of air accumulates in the intracranial cavity and produces a mass effect on the brain. We describe a case in which tension pneumocephalus was caused by the performance of continuous lumbar CSF drainage in a middle-aged man who had experienced a temporal bone fracture. Continuous lumbar CSF drainage is commonly performed in patients with tempo...
